Ambient Operations: Automating Istio Orchestration with Argo - Mitch Connors, Aviatrix & Christian Hernandez, Akuity

Service Meshes are eating the world, with 47% of CNCF End User companies reporting running a Service Mesh in Production, but maintaining a service mesh is still difficult, with thousands of sidecars needing monthly upgrades to stay ahead of vulnerabilities, and unique architectures which make upgrading service meshes with traditional tooling difficult. To address these problems and more, Istio has released Ambient Mode, which moves the proxy out of the sidecar, making fully declarative upgrades and rollbacks possible. This talk will take declarative Istio Upgrades from possibility to reality. We will walk through a series of demos, building an operations platform for Istio with Argo. With this platform in place, upgrade testing across dev, staging, and prod can proceed automatically when a new version of Istio is released. New versions of Istio can be rolled out progressively to each application in a cluster, and rollbacks can be automatically triggered when an outage is detected.
